EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
Volume 8 Issue 1
Oliver Ames High School
August 2009

PRINCIPAL'S WELCOME TO PARENTS

Welcome to the first edition of the 2009-2010 Oliver Ames High School Parent News Letter. There are four publications each year occurring in August/September, November/December, February/March, and June/July. My hope is that the information contained within this first issue will answer some of your questions regarding the start-up to the school year.

Over the summer we have been busy at OAHS preparing for your child's arrival on September 2, 2009, in anticipation of yet another year of academic and cocurricular excellence.

In preparation for the first day of school, each student will receive his/her schedule in the mail on or about August 28, 2009. The first day of school for students is September 2, 2009, and this will be a regular school day beginning at 7:30 a.m. and concluding at 2:00 p.m. All students will report to their first period class as indicated on their schedules to begin the day. There will be members of the Student Council positioned around the building to assist with directing students who are new to the building on how to get to their classrooms. I will conduct class assemblies in the auditorium to personally welcome each student to our school and introduce some key people and concepts. Freshmen students will meet with me during period two, sophomores well meet during period three, juniors will meet during period four, and seniors will meet during period six. The educational community of Oliver Ames High School is committed to stressing the importance of Respect, Responsibility, and Academic Integrity in an effort to further strengthen our school's reputation of "Excellence in Education."

Each year I produce a detailed Student Handbook full of important information. Due to budget constraints I have produced our handbook as an online resource on our school's web page (www.oliverames.org). If you are in need of a printed copy one can be obtained from the main office at the high school. Our handbook contains detailed procedures, policies, rules and regulations. Over the course of the past few years we have incorporated a daily planner into our student handbook but since we are transitioning to an online handbook this will not be a resource that we will be providing.

I hope what remains of your summer is restful and enjoyable. Before you know it, we will be off on yet another great school year. I am optimistic that we will experience another successful school year full of academic and personal growth.

On behalf of the faculty and staff of Oliver Ames High School, I thank you for intrusting you child's education to our school. We commit to you that we will do everything possible to help your child reach his/her full potential. On a personal note, I consider myself blessed to be able to work with your children and look forward to reacquainting myself with returning students and families as well as getting to know a large number of new students and families to our school.

OAHS Mission Statement and Expectations

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our Mission Statement and Academic, Civic and Social Expectations. These guiding documents are the cornerstones for everything we do, and I feel it is important for each family to reflect upon these statements as we begin a new school year.

Mission Statement

The Oliver Ames High School community of faculty, staff, students, parents and residents believe that in order to fulfill its mission of excellence and equity in education, we must embody the ideals of a comprehensive high school. To that end, we will work together to create a safe, nurturing and stimulating learning environment. Students will become skillful learners and independent thinkers who contribute in many ways to our ever-changing world. We recognize the need for a variety of learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and promote individual responsibility and respectful interaction. By achieving goals and overcoming adversity, students will be encouraged to reach their potential and be prepared to assume meaningful roles in society.
